Ruaha, Tanzania, part 3

So much space.. dwarfs the giraffe.

DPP_6401

wide flat rivers..

DPP_6407

That are easily waded across.  Now that I see these photos, I see that I’ve got the giraffe ‘standing’ on the tree.  Not very good composition!

This is one of the two types of red billed horn bill.  As I said before, I forget how to identify them.  They are building a nest.  When they are done, and the female lays the eggs, the male seals up the cavity and she stays in there until the chicks are ready to fledge.  He feeds her through a small slit.  Pretty amazing, I think.

DPP_6564

Watch this leaf that was brought to add to the nest….

DPP_6565DPP_6566

Apparently, it didn’t meet high quality standards..

This is another hornbill..  a crowned hornbill.  Only one we saw!

Another giant baobob with an interesting history, I’m sure.

This is a bachelor herd.. a bunch of boys without a herd of their own.

This young mother decided she wasn’t happy with our presence.  She charged the vehicle a couple of times.  We left.

Somebody else checking us out.

Next few are just landscape.. trying to get the feel of all the vast space on these plains.  It’s so beautiful here!

More baobobs with distinctive features.  Easy to see them as hiding places..

DPP_6736DPP_6738

This gives you somewhat a perspective on the size of baobobs.  This one isn’t even as big as they get.

DPP_6740

This is a male lesser kudu.  Not as common as the greater and was the only male kudu with a mature set of horns that I saw on this trip.  Their horns are my favorite… the way they twist.

  1. So many great photos of elephants. Having that awesome green long grass in your backgrounds makes for really good photos. Here are some of the photos that jumped out at me, 6574, 6577, 6581, 6590, 6435.
I love the boys pushing and shoving but there is too many for me to comment on.
The young elephant charging and then doing his best to destroy a bush were great, 6449, 6450, 6457, 6458, 6463. I could go on and on.
6488 and 6492 of the elephants leaving amidst the landscape and 6658 the landscape with the lions on the river bed, great shots.
And finally the LBRoller 6667, tremendous photo, the light was in the perfect place.
Nice shot of the Baobob 6419 and 6425 a really nice landscape.

Nancy so many great photos here and I have to agree, you certainly did see a lot of elephants but as you can see from my comments, I have looked at ever single photo and loved seeing them all.

I think your landscape shots in this entry have been outstanding.

Are you getting any where near the end of your photos?
