Elephants and the Chobe River.. with Grant Atkinson

There is always so much happening on and around the Chobe River.  And all three days we were there, were spent on a boat.

Calves and adults seen to enjoy the water equally.

Stirring of the water and grass for those tasty clumps of grass.

Love the big bulls… so stately and calm.

Although it doesn’t appear as dramatic here, it was pretty cool to watch these elephants emerging from the dust swirling beyond the river bank.

They came down for a drink and then returned up the river bank and disappeared.

More elephants that were close enough to focus on their faces.

Hippos, elephants, grey heron, and maribou storks.

The elephants that are on the islands in the river, cross the river in the late afternoon.  They look amazing with their dark wet skin and the sunlight glistening off their bodies.

Grant suggested that a good time to see their eyes was after they emerged from water.  It washes away the dirt and dust in their long eyelashes (which protects their eyes).

We’re getting the once over as he emerged from the water.

  1. But, but, but…………..I don’t want it to stop here. I am just loving these photos. The clean eye, wow Grant knows what he’s doing. The elephants framed by another elephant are absolutely amazing shots. The snorkelling elephants as they cross the river, wow I love the colours and the sharpness. The sunset photos, the elephant reaching into the tree from the water, the family lined up at the rivers edge all drinking, so many terrific shots. I can understand how hard it must have been to decide what to share.
Please tell me you have more to share, I don’t want your photos or trip for that matter, to come to an end.

  2. I started a reply but it disappeared. I am so glad that you are enjoying them so much. I should be out there practicing what I’ve learned but the weather has been so awful,
And yes, I have many more that aren’t birds, cats, dogs and elephants.
